Jefferson County Clean Sweeps Limiting Number of Participants

This year the clean sweep programs are experiencing financial shortfalls because the Governor proposed to eliminate clean sweep grants from the state budget. For this reason, we are limiting the number of participants per event to 100 because of the cost. We will not take anyone who has not registered, so register early. The Solid Waste/Air Quality Committee will accept donations or sponsorship from residents, service clubs or businesses to offset the costs related to clean sweeps.

There will be a $10 charge per vehicle for all households and farms. We will have an additional charge of $10 each if residents bring in more than two TVs or monitors. Businesses will continue to be charged per pound for the materials brought to a clean sweep. Businesses are required to fill out VSQG sheets (very small quantity generator) two weeks in advance of the clean sweep. All participants are required to register at least one week prior to the event.

The total cost of four clean sweeps is $90,000 in disposal costs and an additional $5,000 in office supplies, copying, and printing. We have volunteers to help work at all the clean sweeps so that helps cut the cost of labor. It costs 22 cents a pound to dispose of all the electronics. Residents can help by considering different options for disposal of their electronics. Best Buy will take TVs and computer monitors less than 32 inches. The cost is $10, but in turn they will give you an in-house gift certificate of $10. Check out their website for more information. Goodwill will take TVs newer than 1992 that are in good working order and cable ready. Goodwill also takes stereos, but no console TVs or stereos - they don't have the room. Goodwill also asks that you don't bring kerosene or kerosene lanterns to their stores. Kerosene should be brought to a clean sweep. Two companies that will take electronics are CRT Processing Corporation in Janesville (608-754-3400) and Cascade-Asset Management in Madison (888-222-8399). Both companies will properly dispose of your electronics. Check with your local resale shops for more options.

In Jefferson County, residents don't have permanent sites to dispose of their chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or electronics. Clean sweep is the proper way of disposing these materials. The Solid Waste/Air Quality Committee asks residents of Jefferson County to be wise shoppers. Buy products that can be recycled or that don't create waste.
